Quality Function Deployment (QFD) is a management technique interwoven into the LEAN processes of Toyota Management System. It is “a product development tool that systematically deploys customer requirements into production requirements.”

As one of the key Total Quality Management (TQM) techniques, QFD relies heavily on the teamwork. Multidisciplinary teams are break the barriers of interdepartmental cooperation and improving communication, both internal and external.

QFD was used as a team-based technique to identify and translate customer requirements into technical specification used for product planning, design development, process planning and control and for production scheduling and monitoring purposes. Quality Function Deployment takes broad product specifications or specific problems, and through a series of matrices, breaks them into specific action assignments. In short, QFD translates customer requirements into appropriate technical requirements.

The phases of QFD applicable to the product development cycle from product concept to actual production help to communicate (deploy) customer requirements to the design team and, ultimately, to the production operators. QFD is often associated with a paradigm shift from traditional manufacturing quality control to designed-in quality.

– a systematic process focusing business on the customers
– proper identification of customer needs and expectations are identified and addressed
– customer requirements translated into meaningful engineering (or business) terms
– treating every unit down-stream as a “customer”, and every unit up-stream as a “supplier”(both internal or external to the company)
– better understanding of manufacturing/service processes and their interdependencies
– effective continuous improvements to the business processes and the designed-in and processed-in quality of products and services.
