Advanced Product Quality Planning
(APQP) is a set of procedures and techniques recommended for product
development for suppliers and subcontractors engaged in the Automotive
industry (it may be also used by other industries, if adopted).
APQP defines requirements and guidelines for product development system as
accepted by “Big Three”, and other Automotive manufacturers and their
suppliers.
Automotive Industry Action Group
(AIAG), defined the purpose of APQP as "to produce a product quality plan
which will support development of a product or service that will satisfy the
customer."
APQP is mandatory for Tier I suppliers who are required to follow APQP
procedures and techniques and, ultimately, are expected to be compliant and
registered to
ISO/TS16949.
APQP requires up to 23 topics (Automotive customer may wave some of these
requirements) which have to be completed in line with APQP requirements and
guidelines, before the volume production is started. The 23 key topics apply to
such aspects of design and development stage as: DFMEA/FMEA, robustness,
testing, specification, production process design, quality inspection standards,
process capability, production capacity, process and product validation, product
packaging, product testing, personnel training, etc.
