LEAN+: Quality Function Deployment - QFD

 

Quality Function Deployment or QFD is defined as “a system for translating consumer requirements into appropriate company requirements at every stage, from research, through product design and development, to manufacturing, distribution, installation and marketing, sales and service”. Strategically used QFD becomes one of the processes leading to the long-term market dominance through high quality. 
 

QFD considers not only the documented requirements, but explores the undefined expectations and anticipations of the customer, and drastically improves the understanding of customer requirements, ”wants” and “needs”. It applies measurable values to the identified consumer needs and expectations, and meticulously incorporates them into the products and/or services. As one of the key Total Quality Management - TQM techniques, QFD relies heavily on the teamwork. Its activities involve multidisciplinary teams, hence becoming a very effective tool breaking barriers in interdepartmental cooperation and improving communication, both internal and external.

SCOPE OF SERVICES:
During typical engagement focused on development and implementation of Quality Function Deployment initiatives we will assist in:

  • Setting up research and development (R&D) that will continuously listen to what customers need and deploy customer requirements into product specification and production requirements (including those which apply to quality, supplied product, subcontracted operations, etc.)
  • The supplier-customer relationship chain correlating the design features of the supplier-delivered product with the expectations of the customer.
  • Define the interrelationships between critical characteristics, cascading in a logical flow, from the concept to the manufacturing to the post-manufacturing stages.
  • Designing a “house of quality”, where the “whats” (the expectations of the customer) meet with “hows” (the particular engineering design features which satisfy “whats”) in the relationship matrix.
  • Integrating the corporate Vision, the Quality Policy and related goals with QFD.
